Jeff Young lives in Vale, N.C. - an area known as the Catawba Valley Pottery region. He produces wood fired folk pottery. His traditional line of pottery uses hand dug clay, ash glazes and is fired in his wood kiln. The alkaline glaze used is a combination of wood ash, ground glass, and clay. Jeff Young fires the pottery in his wood kiln. This process takes an average of 12 - 14 hours and reaches a temperature of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. He uses pine slabs from a local saw mill. Wood fired pottery is a more intense and time consuming process, but produces a truly unique and authentic folk style of pottery.
